Love the story about your mum's ashes, especially as today, 5 May, was my mother's birthday. She died 14 years ago and I, too, think of her almost every day.

Thanks Kitty. Yes, I still always think of my mum on her birthday in July although she would be 112 this year if she was still with us!!

Bunchberry, shooting star, rose vervain and others are perfectly suitable alternatives. Leave forget-me-nots to poets and painters, and not the North American garden where it doesn’t belong.

That’s a very invasive plant in most of North America. It takes over the soil and stops natives from growing which damages the ecosystem. It comes from Africa where it should have stayed but gardeners like you tell others to plant species without any consideration for our ecosystem. Just like Lily-of-the- Valley and many others. Some can be controlled, forget-me-not isn’t one of them. Fortunately unlike goutweed and many others it’s at least easy to pull but if the rhizomes stay, which they do, others will come up. Why tell people to keep planting invasive plants?
